The Belief in the Pursuit of Beauty: The "Upward Ascent" of the Soul
I am someone who has studied and worked in the field of Psychology. My belief is in pursuing beauty and goodness in order to achieve perfection of soul and self.
So what is your faith?
If self-belief helps us survive and succeed, then belief in beauty makes our lives worth living. The great writer Dostoevsky famously said, "Beauty will save the world." This is not just flowery language, but a profound psychological principle.
Beauty is a sign of order and hope.
According to evolutionary psychology, humans are attracted to beauty (harmonious landscapes, well-proportioned faces, art, etc.) because it represents safety, order, and vitality.
When you cultivate the belief in pursuing beauty, you are sending a powerful message to your brain: "I am not just surviving, I am living a meaningful life."
Sublimation: When people believe in beauty, they tend to transform their pain and inner turmoil into works of art, photography, or simply rearranging their living space. This belief turns adversity into creative material.
The "Enclothed Cognition" effect
Belief in beauty is also reflected in the way we take care of ourselves. Science calls this Enclothed Cognition.
If you believe you deserve to look good, you'll dress neatly even when working from home. Your brain will then receive signals from your attire and adjust your mindset to appear more professional, confident, and sharp.
Those who believe in beauty don't view grooming as frivolous. They see it as a ritual of self-respect and respect for life.
Beauty is an antidote against nihilism.
In the darkest moments, the belief that "beauty still awaits somewhere" (a late-blooming flower, a sunset, a kind smile) is a lifeline that prevents people from falling into despair. Pursuing beauty is practicing faith in goodness (Truth, Goodness, and Beauty). It keeps our souls soft amidst a rigid world.
